Maya Jane Coles - Essential Mix - 09-07-2011 by R_co

the bbc essential mix, for those of you who are unaware, is a very big thing in the dj world. if Pete Tong asks you to make one, it’s because you are, or will soon be, on top of the world. his Essential Mix radio show, which started airing in 1993, has had the privilege to host the likes of Frankie Knuckles, Richie Hawtin, DJ Koze, James Lavelle and just about every other DJ/Producer that has impacted the way we listen to music over the past fifteen years.

that said, 24 yr. old Maya Jane Coles just dropped a bomb the other day. this is easily one of the best essential mixes i have ever heard, and without a doubt the best one of the year, so far. her talent on deck is almost surgical, but even more impressive is her work as a producer, which she more than adequately demonstrates in the mix, along with the generous list of original productions and remixes she’s offered up over the past year. so, put your headphones on or turn your subs up, because this is 120 minutes of straight vibes.

i’m not huge on watches, necklaces or any accessory, really. however, i am a pretty big fan of simple, streamlined, sleek design and this is probably the coolest watch i’ve ever seen. this is the ZOT, by Nooka, a New York based fashion/design company founded by artist/designer Matt Waldman. the hours are represented by the three rows of four dots at the top of the face, while the minutes are represented by the bar underneath that looks similar to the power/life meter of almost every fighting videogame ever. plus there’s a little window to the bottom left to display seconds. if you can wrap your brain around the $275 pricetag, you can go get one, or any other their other cool watches/products HERE.

this is something i’ve been listening to a lot, as of late. this is Deadboy’s Here EP. this EP is three of the the most skillfully crafted tunes i’ve heard in quite a while. definitely some next level shit. i’m especially fond of the track Here 4 U; a nice UK Funky/Bass track with tons of soul. he just finished a US tour where he absolutely destroyed my ears at Beauty Bar, here in Chicago. if you missed him this go around, be sure to catch him next time. below is a preview of his EP, Here. if you dig it, be sure to grab it on Beatport, iTunes, etc… Deadboy also dropped a mixtape, about a week ago, that my boy Nick over at [redthreat] posted. you can check it HERE.

this is a nice funky, bass track from Korean dj/producer Neon Jung. it’s got some great synth soundscapes, very reminiscent of Joy Orbison and Oriol, and keeps a nice house/tech house bounce. should get some feet shuffling. dig it…
